Basketball Commissioner Position Summary:
The Basketball Commissioner is responsible for overseeing the smooth and efficient operation of youth basketball through Forest Youth Athletic Association (FYAA). This includes recruiting coaches, managing league schedules, organizing team drafts, and ensuring a positive experience for all participants. The coordinator plays a key leadership role, working closely with coaches, parents, and league officials to promote sportsmanship, inclusion, and a love for the game.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coach Recruitment:
- Actively recruit, interview, and select volunteer coaches for teams.
- Ensure all coaches have undergone proper background checks and training.
- Schedule Coordination:
- Help develop and manage the season schedule, including practices and games.
- Communicate schedules to coaches, parents, and league officials in a timely manner.
- Adjust schedules as necessary due to weather, facility availability, or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Team Drafts:
- Organize and oversee team drafts to ensure balanced and fair teams.
- Work with coaches to establish equitable playing opportunities for all participants.
- Communication and Support:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for coaches, parents, and league participants.
- Provide ongoing support to coaches, offering guidance on league rules, policies, and best practices.
- Conflict Resolution:
- Mediate disputes between coaches, parents, or players, ensuring all issues are addressed professionally and in line with organizational values.
- Promote Sportsmanship:
- Foster a culture of respect, fairness, and inclusion within the league.
- Ensure all children, regardless of skill level, feel welcome and are given opportunities to develop their abilities.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in youth sports, coaching, or administration is preferred.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Commitment to promoting a positive, inclusive sports environment.
- Passion for working with youth and contributing to their personal and athletic development.
- Availability to attend league events, practices, and games throughout the season.
Time Commitment:
- Hours will vary from in-season to off-season. Approximate commitment of 5-8 hours per week during the season, with additional time during the start of the season for coach recruitment and scheduling.
