FYAA Soccer Information

FYAA offers a recreational, development-based youth soccer program for ages 4-18. The purpose of recreational soccer is to provide an opportunity for the players to have fun, develop soccer skills, and foster a love of the game. Sportsmanship and safety are the cornerstones of our program, and our volunteer coaches are committed to equally developing all players.

The FYAA Soccer program is open to all applicants regardless of skill level or place of residence. Registration is offered in the spring, summer and fall seasons. The division registered for will depend on their birth year (use the chart below for reference).

Practices

Spring practices begin in March. Fall practices begin in August. Older age groups generally start a week or two before U6 & U8.

Games

Most games are held on Saturdays. Spring's games begin late March. Fall games usually start after Labor Day. Make-up games default to Sunday afternoons 8 days later. Spring concludes in late May. Autumn games typically end in late October or early November.

Game schedules for our Under 6 and Under 8 leagues are determined by FYAA.

Game schedules for U10 and older are cooperatively scheduled through CVRSA. Locations of away games can be found on our website and CVRSA (cvrsa.org). Also away game STATUS is often updated on CVRSA's site. Check before you drive to see if an away game has been postponed.

Forming Teams

Requests to play with a friend or to facilitate carpooling are considered in assigning rosters. Not all requests can be met. Requests must be included as a comment in the registration.

Rosters are formed by a Draft Committee. In drafting rosters for all teams, the children of the head coach and assistant coach are automatically assigned to that team. Each Head Coach is allowed to have one Assistant Coach prior to the draft.

Practices will be held at Thomas Jefferson Elementary (U6, U8), New London Academy (U10) and FYAA Soccer Fields (U12, U15, U19).

US Youth Soccer Age Matrix

Birth years for each season are shown below. The seasons are based on Fall-Spring (e.g. 2023-2024 runs from Fall 2023 through Summer 2024). FYAA uses two year groupings, e.g. “U8” consists of U7 and U8.

FYAA Soccer age divisions are as follows:

  • U6
  • U8
  • U10
  • U12
  • U15
  • U19

We often get questions along the lines of “Why can’t my daughter play in U10? She doesn’t turn 10 until after the season finishes.” The answer to this is in the matrix below.

Age groups are based on the calendar year a player was born; monikers such as U10 are just a shorthand expressions and don’t imply that anyone not yet 10 can play in that division.

Coaches:

FYAA is always in need of coaches! Please consider volunteering as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach. We have materials and resources available to guide you if you are new to soccer. Bedford County policy requires all coaches to have a background check.

Equipment:

Players in all age groups will receive jerseys and a pair of soccer socks to keep. Please return any other loaned equipment (shin-guards, etc.) to your child’s head coach (or designated assistant) at the end of the season.
