Flag Football

FYAA Flag Football Information

FYAA offers a recreational, youth flag football program for ages 5-17. Our flag football league is co-ed and no contact, giving boys and girls of all abilities a chance to develop their fundamental football skills in a positive, inclusive environment.

The FYAA Flag Football program is part of the NFL Flag League and is open to all applicants regardless of skill level. Registration is offered in the spring season. The division registered for will depend on their age.

Practices

Spring practices begin in March. Each team will practice one evening per week. All practice days are chosen by the team's coach.

Games

All games will be played on Sunday afternoons April - June.

Forming Teams

There is an in-person draft held at the beginning of each season and will be a scheduled time for each age division.

Rosters are formed at the draft by coaches under the supervision of the Football Commissioner and FYAA Administrator. In drafting rosters for all teams, the children of the head coach and assistant coach are automatically assigned to that team. Each Head Coach is allowed to have one Assistant Coach prior to the draft.

Practices and games will be held at FYAA Park Complex (Nissan Field).

Flag Football Age Groups

The age determination date for NFL Flag is the child's age as of April 1st of the current year. This date is used to determine if a player is eligible to participate in any of NFL Flag's divisions of play.

FYAA Flag Football age divisions are as follows:

  • 5-7 Coed
  • 8-10 Coed
  • 11-14 Coed

We often get questions along the lines of “How is the age determined?" The answer to this is based on the age determination date used by NFL Flag Football, determined by the actual age of a child on April 1 of the current year.

Coaches:

FYAA is always in need of coaches! Please consider volunteering as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach. We have materials and resources available to guide you if you are new to flag football.  Bedford County policy requires all coaches to have a background check.

Equipment:

Players in all age groups will receive an official NFL club jersey and a flag belt. Parents will need to provide rubber sole football cleats and a mouthpiece. Optional item: gloves. Please return any other loaned equipment (helmets, bats, etc.) to your child’s head coach (or designated assistant) at the end of the season.
